Experiment
7 - 25% Pd at 100 mA
Cell:
- Cathode:
3.5 cm of exposed 0.25mm Ag wire as close as possible to 1 cm x 2 cm
Landauer CR-39 chip.
- Anode:
Approximately 3.5 cm of 1 mm Pt wire as close as possible to 1 cm
x 2 cm Landauer CR-39 chip
- Cell
also contains (loose on the bottom of the cell):
- A
1 cm x 1 cm Landauer CR-39 chip
- A
1 cm x 1 cm “cover plate” CR-39 chip (this CR-39 does not show alpha
tracks – probably due to a lack of etching in NaOH)
- ALL
CR-39 have a piece of 6 micron mylar film covering half of it. The
mylar is glued down with 5 minute epoxy only on the corners of the film.
- WITH
magnets
Electrolyte:
- 33
gm D2O + 0.42 gm LiCl + 0.044 gm PdCl2
Procedure:
Etch:
- 6.5M NaOH at 68°C for 90 minutes
Results:
- Proceeded in a similar manner to E2.
- At the end of the run, very little debris was in the bottom of the
cell
- The debris DID go back into solution
- CR-39:
- Glue
that held mylar down had failed
- Pd
had obviously grown under mylar film on cathode sample (considered a
"no test" for the Mylar part of the experiment)
- cathode
chip had similar pre-etch look to E2
- the
Landauer "bottom" piece showed nothing interesting
Cathode CR-39 - Pd went UNDERNEATH mylar

"Cover Plate" CR-39
There are pre-etch photos. This CR-39 does not seem
to etch in 6.5M NaOH at 68°C. While the NaOH becomes cloudy when etching
Landauer chips, it stays perfectly clear even after extended periods of time
with a "cover plate" chip in it.
