Experiment 14 - NiCl2

 Cell:

• Cathode:  3.5 cm of exposed 0.25mm Ag wire as close as possible to 1 cm x 2 cm Landauer CR-39 chip
• Anode:  Approximately 5 cm of 0.5 mm Pt wire with Pt screen spot welded on end  
• without magnets

 Electrolyte:

• 25 gm H2O + 0.318 gm LiCl + 0.178 gm NiCl2·6H2O (0.03 M)

 Procedure:  

• 10 mA for 10 days

• 100 mA for 2 days

Etch:

• 6.5M NaOH at 68°C for 6 hours

Results (Started on 1.12.07 Ended on 1.25.07):

• By the second day, the cell was full of the black cloud.  It sat at 10mA waiting for this to clear but it never did.  After one day at 100mA, it finally condensed

• Most of the "stuff" was in a loose blob off to one side from the cathode wire.  The wire itself was coated with a hard layer, but very thin.

• Tracks down the middle.
